LOST IN THE CITY
On the basis of the vulgar locations which we might pass by in our everyday life, the three artists – Shiau Bei-Chen, Hsu Pei-Chen, and Liao Cheng-Ping – create a grandeur portrayal of the selfness in the group exhibition
If we map out the contours of the city we are living in, what will be the memories of those locations we are witnessing? In the city, the perceived concepts of time and space are transforming at an uncontrollable speed – which is so fast that we can only capture those vague images passing by while we take the MRT train, while we drive a car, while we take the bus, or even while we silently sit in the café. Those flashing images are silenced for that their noisy sounds have already been separated by the windows. As a replacement, the windows reveal another level of reality – the image of "us" in reflection. Such an ambiguous membrane obstructs the contact between the external surroundings and human beings but meanwhile it ironically makes it possible for us to "look into" space on the other side of the window. The dual-existence of the external world and the selves in Shiau Bei-Chen’s works are delicately transformed into the obscure and ambiguous images kept in the transparent material layer by layer.
However, what might happen if the duration of vision in our gaze becomes a spatial storage of any certain location? In Hsu Pei-Chen’s paintings, the temporal nomadic facilities such as mobile toilets, tent, iron fence, temporary housing, and many other temporary installations existing in the ordinary landscape all together intervene in the site structure. Some of them are forgotten and deserted at the urban fringe, while some of them are dismantled and are again fabricated at another site. In their nomadic life as fated, the temporary installations seem to be collaged into the artificial site, creating the heterogeneous scenery – which perfectly describes Hsu Pi-Chen’s perception of the disqualified city in terms of time and space.
Those sites at the urban fringe may be hard to be captured by us. Most of the time, we “look at” the fragmentized space under the bridge or the unfrequented riverbank, but we seldom “look into” those locations. Our memories of them are only stored in the margin of our perception. Liao Chen-Ping thus intends to create a conflict against the transitional spaces through the coordination of his physical body. Through his eyes and his hands, Liao suppresses and conditions the subjective emotion of the individuals in search of any feeble message hidden behind those marginalized images. By warming the messages up, the three artists demonstrate the definition of visualization in both form and structure through their individual will.
City – a space without any definite boundary – is returning to its own disqualification in the exhibition
